Squid are remarkable ocean predators. This is one of the main shellfish seafood item and can be eaten in a variety of ways: curried, fried, battered, stewed or as part of dishes such as the well-known Spanish Paella. Squid is low in fat, high in protein and are internationally famous for their taste. It's often given the culinary name calamari, which may be more familiar if you've ever bought squid in a restaurant or supermarket.
These invertebrates (animals without backbones) are molluscs, just like snails, but they do not have protective outer shells. They have a tube-shaped body and a small, rod-like internal shell called a pen. Squid have two tentacles that are longer than its arms.
The squid tentacles are completely edible and especially good when flash-fried to make calamari. The meat is firm and white with a mild, slightly sweet, almost nutty flavor. Squid is a good source of zinc, manganese, copper, selenium, riboflavin, and vitamin B12. They are also an essential source of amino acids.
